Literacy Related Activities and difficulties with Stamina

Remember, disability is a highly individualised experience. People with the same disability may have very different capabilities and/or needs, so it is always best to discuss any adaptations to practice, the environment or equipment directly with the disabled person themselves rather than making assumptions about what adjustments may be suitable.

Stamina is the capability of sustaining prolonged stressful effort. Some medical conditions and certain disabilities can have a significant impact on a person’s general stamina, including their ability to concentrate and focus; these include, for example, heart conditions, asthma and Multiple Sclerosis. People with mobility difficulties may need to exert a great deal of effort to get around which will impact on their stamina, whilst others, who have mental health difficulties, may find that the medication they need to take affects their ability to sustain concentration or physical activity.

Difficulties associated with stamina are unlikely to have a particular effect on literacy related activities unless the course requires a substantial amount of reading. If this is the case, the teacher should ensure that sufficient time is allotted to the task and also encourage rest breaks to rest the eyes and also assist concentration.
